The newer rule of play, given in almost all card game books since 1945, is that a player is only obliged to beat the highest card so far played to a trick is a trump was led. Players are, however, still obliged to trump if they have no card of the suit led. However, many groups continue to follow the older rule that you must always head the trick when possible, as given in the play section on this page. The scoring combinations and their values are listed below. Each combination exists in a single and a double version. The declarer and their partner then get the opportunity to exchange 4 cards. The number passed can also be set in the Options menu to 3 or this stage can be disabled. Some play that if you have five nines in your hand and you have no meld (except perhaps deeces), the hand is thrown in ('bunched') and redealt. Besides making melds, there are two ways to score in Auction Pinochle — points and bids. If the bidder has already reached or exceeded the value of his or her bid right from the start, play stops and the bidder wins the value of the bid. A good strategy is to focus on melding runs, double Pinochles, and marriages. An optional scoring method for cards taken in play is to count each Aceand ten 10 points, and count each king and queen 5 points. This is known as the 'going set.' Winning the game requires one of the teams to score 150 points first. In a round where both teams score 150 points or more, the team that met the round's contract triumphs. The primary objective it to maximize points for yourself, and the secondary goal is to prevent your opponents from making their bids so they lose points instead of gaining points. The player who won the bid exposes the 3 cat cards for all to see and then places them in his hand. He then discards any 3 of his 18 cards face down into what will become his trick pile.
